Charlevoix Area Hospital Civic Garden

14700 Lake Shore Drive at the Charlevoix Area Hospital

Also known as the 'Meditation Garden', this garden supoorts the belief that true healing involves all five meditation senses.

The Charlevoix Area Garden Club supports the planting and maintenance for four beautiful “rooms” in front of our local hospital.

To the left of the main entrance is a very special garden planted and maintained in memory of one of our member's sister. As you enter this serene walkway, flanked with pink Carefree Delight Roses and red Meidiland Roses, your eyes take in a full wall of yellow Day Lilies interspersed with Bleeding Heart, Pee Gee Hydrangeas, Siberian Iris and, a purple Butterfly Bush. A little island in this “room,” greets you with a mass of Dianthus, and Spiderwort. The colors are mind boggling! A special bench surrounded by Chrysanthemums at the end of the path allows the visitor to sit quietly and enjoy nature's bounty.

To the right of the main entrance is a long wooden visitor bench with Hosta growing underneath. A lovely dwarf Japanese Maple completes this bed.

Across from the main entrance, a memorial bench is flanked with additional pink Carefree Delight Roses, red Meidiland Roses, Coneflower, Black-eyed Susan, yellow Day Lilies, climbing Hydrangeas, Alliums, and a huge display of variegated Hostas. It is a beautiful spot from which to enjoy the view of Lake Michigan's sparkling water.

As you approach the front entrance to the Hospital's medical records area, you walk through a sea of purple Lavender on the right hand side and ever-blooming Roses on the left. Behind the Lavender, one's eye is drawn to giant Alliums, Black-eyed Susan and Coneflowers with a low border of pink and red Dianthus. Delicate pink Pee Gee Hydrangea, and a lovely Weeping Cherry tree are next to the building. This bed includes two beautiful Douglas Fir Pines. On the left side of this path, one sees more Roses, with a clump of Lilium near the end. The border on this side is made up of small yellow and purple Violets. Yearly, Geraniums are planted around the hospital sign, which is in front of this bed. These Geraniums are the only seasonal plants that we use; all the others are perennial in nature.

Twelve members care for this beautiful and tranquil garden.
