The Courtyard Garden can be viewed by entering the school at the main entrance on Garfield Street. Immediately in front of you are large windows viewing a warm inviting Courtyard with an array of shrubs, flowers and a flowering Crab Apple tree. This garden was initially planted for the use of the High School senior class in 1982. Early spring color begins with the striking blooms of the two Star Magnolias on either side of the Courtyard along with yellow Daffodils, Grape Hyacinth and Rhododendron -- then continues throughout the season with Peony, Columbine, Lady's Mantle, Weigelia, a tree Hydrangea and various annuals planted for bright color. This well established garden is now a place of respite for visitors and faculty.

When you exit the school, take a short walk to the left around the building. Nestled directly behind the school you will come upon a beautiful surprise -- a Butterfly Garden bursting with color and busy with Birds, Bees and, of course, Butterflies. The first section in the very front is a Wild Flower garden, which blooms throughout the season with bright colors -- orange, red, white California Poppy, blue and red Flax, Cosmos, baby Snapdragon, Desert Four O'clock, Primrose and desert Bluebell -- to name a few.

Stroll down the freshly placed stepping stones and view two separate areas planted with several Butterfly bushes and a variety of both host and nectar plants, which specifically attract buterflies. Early spring begins with bright yellow clusters of 100-plus Daffodils followed by a season of bursting color -- Shasta Daisy, purple and pink Phlox, purple Coneflower, Sunflower, Yarrow, Gallardia, Coral Bell, Black-eyed Susan, Cosmos, Monarda, Butterfly Weed, Alyssum and many more. You'll have to see for yourself.

This garden was established in 2004 as a joint project with the Middle School Builders Club, their advisors, the school principal and a committee of Garden Club members. The development of this garden is an educational aid for students, faculty and community. Bring your lunch or a good book, sit back and "yes", the "Butterflies" will come.
